Temple epitomizes an urban, public research university. This means that research and creative activity hold a place of priority in the University’s mission. It also means that Temple is positioned to contribute in particularly powerful ways to the economy and the quality of life in the region and that it is able to offer its students educational opportunities that would not otherwise be possible. These range from taking part in major laboratory studies, even as an undergraduate, to participating in ground-breaking exhibits and theatrical productions with leading artist-scholars.
Temple’s research supports business sectors vital to the economy of the Greater Philadelphia region, including the financial services, chemical, pharmaceutical, and hospitality industries. This contribution is particularly important because Temple is one of only three research universities in Philadelphia, which together account for just over $700 million in research activity annually. By comparison, Boston’s seven research institutions generate $1.36 billion annually, and those of San Francisco and Los Angeles even more.
As Temple strives to provide its students with an enriching and challenging experience, research plays a critical role. A thriving program of research, scholarship, and creative activity attracts top faculty and generates new learning opportunities. Through its Diamond Scholars program, Temple is inviting undergraduates across the University to join faculty in original research and creative projects. “This is an invaluable opportunity,” says Peter Jones, vice provost for undergraduate studies, “particularly for students who will be competing for places in graduate and professional schools.”
Funding from both institutions and individuals is critical to growth in research at Temple. “People sometimes assume that only agencies like the National Institutes of Health or the National Science Foundation support university research,” explains Lisa Staiano-Coico. “But Temple has research centers of every size that could be transformed through individual gifts for endowment or programming.” Donors also support research through endowed or term professorships and chairs, which help Temple recruit top faculty, many of whom bring external funding with them.
