Temple is a publicly supported university with a mission of advancing the public good, and this aim shapes every aspect of its identity and operation. Temple develops programs of study, establishes research centers, forges partnerships, and launches outreach efforts all responding to current needs in its community and in society. In return, life and learning at the University are immensely enriched by Temple's connections with the world beyond its campuses.
A study by independent consultants estimates Temple's contribution to the regional economy to be $2.7 billion annually. This includes the University's operational spending, investments in construction, activity generated by students and visitors, and the spending of its more than 13,000 employees—the city's third largest workforce.
Temple University Health System fills a vital role, providing superb healthcare to patients across the region and making this care available to a large population of uninsured and underserved families. Anchored by Temple University Hospital, this non-profit network of hospitals and physicians provides more than $60 million in un-reimbursed care to the Philadelphia community annually.
In countless ways, Temple puts the expertise of its faculty to work in service of the community. Scholars in education and other fields dedicate themselves to improving the experience of students in Philadelphia's public schools. Those in social administration conduct programs ranging from workforce development to teen suicide prevention. Others promote the study of engineering among female high school students, advise civil officials on emergency preparedness, and offer one of the nation's most successful community arts programs, Temple Music Prep.
Through community service, Temple students, faculty, and staff give enormously of their time and talent. Temple law students offer free legal assistance to individuals in need and coach student mock trial teams in Philadelphia while dental students treat patients locally, in rural Pennsylvania, and Haiti, and undergraduates launch service projects. These range from shoveling snow for elderly neighbors, to volunteering at local after-school programs, to building hydroponic gardens for poor families in the Third World.
